Identity

When you set an identity for yourself, you don't have to decide. You perform.

There's no choice to be made between running every day or not if you are a runner. No choice to be made when you are a writer, musician, or student. You write, play, or study.

Rather, it's a one-time decision that impacts your every-day life in a productive sense: no energy spent deciding if today is the day or not.

The identity sets the pace, you just follow it. Every day.

The ultimate form of intrinsic motivation is when a habit becomes part of your identity. It’s one thing to say I’m the type of person who wants this. It’s something very different to say I’m the type of person who is this.
